Autos not to ply, unions demand relief for drivers
The Federation of the Autorickshaw Trade Unions on Saturday announced that autorickshaws would not ply on Sunday to extend support to the steps taken by the government to prevent the spread of coronavirus. “We have decided not to ply autorickshaws across the State on Sunday considering the welfare of the public in mind,” S Balasubramanian, coordinator of the federation, stated in a statement.

CHENNAI: The federation requested the government to provide relief to the drivers who bought their auto under loan from the banks and private finance companies. “They drivers should be given extended time to repay their loans without interest,” he said, also urging the government to provide Rs 10,000 each to drivers as assistance for the loss of income due to thevirus scare.
Also, the RTOs should not impose fine on autorickshaw drivers failing to renew the fitness certificate of their vehicles, the federation said, also asking the State to provide disinfectants and masks free of cost to the drivers who ferry all sections of people, including foreigners.
“We urge the Chief Minister to fulfil these demands considering the coronavirus impact on the drivers whose are suffering loss of income,” he said.
