Limited access to Metro Rail till March 31

After deciding to keep its services closed for one day in the wake of Janata Curfew, the Chennai Metro Rail on Saturday announced further restrictions of its services from March 23 to March 31. The train operation in the morning and evening peak hours would be limited to those engaged in essential services and office-goers involved in essential duties.

An official release said that from Monday, the services from 6 am to 8 am would be available only for those engaged in essential services, while the services between 8 am and 10 am would be for office-goers on essential duties. Similarly, the services from 4 pm to 8 pm would be restricted only for these two categories.Also, there would not be any train services from 4.30 am to 6 am, 10 am to 4 pm, and 8 pm to 11 pm from Monday in order to discourage non-essential travel.


The CMRL has already decided to reduce train frequency from five minutes to seven minutes in the Washermenpet-Airport corridor, while they would ply every 14 minutes in Central-St Thomas Mount corridor.

EMUs cancelled, reduced
The Southern Railway has announced the cancellation of all EMU services operated from Moore Market Complex to Arakkonam and Gummidipoondi, and Chennai Beach to Velachery and Chengalpattu on Sunday in view of Janata curfew. It also announced that MRTS services between Chennai Beach and Velachery would be suspended. A passenger special would be operated every hour from Beach to Chengalpattu and from MMC to Arakkonam and Gummidipoondi from 6 am to 11 am and 6 pm to 10 pm. That is, there would not be any service between 11 am and 6 pm. Meanwhile, more than 100 trains across various divisions have been cancelled as there would be vast reduction in the demand for rail travel in view of Janata Curfew. All Mail/Express trains and Intercity trains originating from Dr MGR Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore, Chengalpattu, Arakkonam junction and Jolarpettai stations have been cancelled.
