Chennai, Kanchi, Erode to be locked

In yet another unprecedented measure, the Centre on Sunday decided to completely lock down 80 districts, including Chennai, Kancheepuram and Erode in Tamil Nadu, across the country.

Soon after the Centre’s advice, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami convened an emergency high-level meeting where it was planned that the advisory would be implemented in a phased manner.

At the meeting it was also decided that examinations for Classes 11 and 12 would be conducted as per the schedule, sources told DT Next. Similarly, it was also decided that the ongoing Assembly session would continue despite an appeal from the Leader of the Opposition MK Stalin to suspend it.

Meanwhile, Palaniswami, who led the clapping exercise at his camp office in support of sanitary and medical workers, announced the suspension of interstate bus and Chennai Metro Rail services till March 31. Sources in the Transport Department said that there will be no restrictions on the bus services within the state. The MTC will also run as usual from 5 am on Monday. Instructions have also been given to Aavin workers to ensure adequate supply of milk.

India records 7 virus deaths
The death toll at the national level, rose to seven with three more coronavirus deaths on Sunday, including the first casualties from Bihar and Gujarat while the COVID-19 cases increased to 360. However, as per ICMR, 396 tested positive. In an effort to contain the spread of the virus, authorities suspended all passenger train and inter-state bus services till March 31. The Union Health Ministry said
one death each was reported from Bihar, Gujarat and Maharashtra on Sunday. A 38-year-old man with a kidney ailment and recent travel history to Qatar died at AIIMS-Patna and a 67-year-old man died at a hospital in Surat. Another death was reported from Mumbai of a 63-year-old man. The Centre meanwhile decided that only skeletal staff will be working in its various ministries and departments. This would also apply to banks, financial institutions and public sector undertakings.

Food minister R Kamaraj also informed that there was no need for public to panic over ration supply as adequate stock was in place.
