However, the man, Manavalan (46) of Pattabiram, was rescued by the Fire and Rescue Services personnel after a battle of two hours. According to the police, Manavalan, a daily wage labourer, lives with his wife and two sons. He used to consume alcohol almost every day, a routine that was hit after the lockdown since March 25. Dejected over not being able to get liquor, he often picked up quarrels with his wife.
On Monday night, too, a quarrel erupted between them after which Manavalan jumped into a 25-foot deep well in front of his house around 8.30 pm. He knew swimming and thus did not drown, but refused to come out until he gets liquor. On information, the police and fire and rescue personnel rushed to the spot and held talks with Manavalan.
However, as he remained adamant that he would not come out, the fire service personnel entered the well and brought him out. He was warned before being handed over to his family members.
