The officer tendered his apologies and also gave the farmer compensation for his losses.
The incident happened at Thamaraipakkam junction in Tiruvallur when the farmer, identified as Karthi, was taking vegetables in gunny bags to the market. Police stopped his two-wheeler and detained him for hours citing lockdown rules. Irritated over this, the farmer dumped all the vegetables on the road. Police had initially blamed Karthi for his action “due to frustration”.
However, on Tuesday evening, SP Aravindhan decided to meet the farmer at the latter’s home in Agaram Kandigai and tendered apologies to him for the action by the police team. The police officer also compensated for the vegetables Karthi had dumped on the road because he could not reach the market on time due to police action.
Sources said the police team responsible for the incident may face departmental action.
