“The inhumane act is condemnable and those indulging in such acts will be detained under Goondas Act. Regarding the Sunday incident, 21 people have been arrested and a hunt has been launched some more suspects. Action will be initiated against them as well,” said the Commissioner during a joint press meet along with Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash.
The Commissioner added that the funeral was done by the Health and Corporation officials as per WHO guidelines. “So police will not spare anyone opposing it and action will be taken as per law,” he said.
Corporation Commissioner G Prakash said that the steps have been taken to intensify the containment activities in Royapuram as the number of COVID-19 cases reported from the zone has crossed 100.
“About 60 cases of them have been reported in three or four wards. Those four wards would be brought under a three-tier containment zone with the help of police personnel. The people from the core area will not be allowed to step out. All steps have been taken to provide them with essentials at doorstep. People in the tier-2 will be allowed to come out only for the essential needs and vehicle movement will be restricted,” he said.
However, as Royapuram is known for its wholesale grocery market, a meeting has been organised with the traders’ representatives to discuss ways to implement the containment activities without affecting the business, he added.
