An official said the 51-year-old engineer was working in two wards where positive cases have been reported, adding that they suspect he could have picked up the infection from there.

The official said that he tested positive during a routine check-up of staff in the area. “He was asymptomatic, and did not have even a cough or cold. He is doing well,” the official said, adding that he already has other medical conditions like a liver problem.

Earlier, Corporation Commissioner G Prakash said that 19 frontline workers of the civic body were tested positive for COVID-19. All of them were asymptomatic, he added.

“All are young and they would be getting out after 14 days of quarantine,” he said, adding that the civic body has taken all the preventive measures to ensure no more frontline workers got infected by the coronavirus.

At least 35,000 persons, including 20,000 conservancy workers and 12 field surveyors, are at work to contain the spread of the pandemic in Chennai. “We are going to provide Kabasura Kudineer and Zinc-Vitamin C fortified tablets course for 10 days.

Already we have completed two days,” the Commissioner added. He said the Corporation was providing 6,100 personal protective equipment on a daily basis for the doctors, attenders and sanitary workers at the hospitals.

“We have PPEs stock for the next 10 days. We are going in the right direction,” he said.
