City records 509 cases in a single day

The COVID-19 tally in Chennai in a day breached the 500-mark with 509 of the 669 who tested positive across TN hailing from the city. The total number of cases in the State has reached 7,204 and three more deaths were recorded, taking the toll to 47.

Of the new cases reported on Sunday, 35 patients were below the age of 12 years, including 22 girls and 13 boys and 49 patients were from the age group of 60 and above.

Besides Chennai, Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu recorded another spike recording 47 and 43 cases respectively. Tirunelveli and Krishnagiri recorded 10 cases each, while Perambalur and Kancheepuram recorded nine and eight cases respectively. 

Villupuram and Ranipet had six cases each and Madurai and Ariyalur had four cases each. Vellore and Theni reported three cases each, Virudhunagar reported two cases, while Cuddalore, Karur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram and Thirupathur had a case each.

The three persons who succumbed include a Corporation domestic breeding checker (DBC worker), who was employed in COVID-19 control works. He died on Sunday morning at 2.30 am. 

A 74-year-old man from Chengalpattu who died on May 8 had tested positive for the virus on Sunday besides a 55-year-old man from Tiruvallur who died on May 9 and tested positive on Sunday. Health Department officials attributed the spike in Chennai to intensified testing of samples. 

A total of 13,367 samples were tested in the last 24 hours and about 135 people were discharged post treatment. The aggregate number of those who have overcome the illness caused by the virus stood at 1,959.
