According to a Chennai Corporation release, a meeting was organised at the Ripon Buildings on Saturday in which the representatives of as many as 40 NGOs took part.

“The NGOs will create awareness campaigns in slum areas as well as in containment areas. Also, the NGOs will work along with the civic officials in providing essential items to residents,” the release said.

The NGOs would also sensitise the residents about hand washing and the importance of wearing masks. They would help eradicate the stigma surrounding the disease.

As per the civic body records, there are around 650 slums and nearly 600 containment zones as on Sunday.

During the meeting, the NGOs had been asked to trace persons with cold, fever and cough and report their details to the civic officials or bring them to hospitals.

They would also explain the benefits of kabasura kudineer and social distancing.
