According to the police, the man, a resident of Ayyappa Nagar, was a labourer at Koyambedu market that emerged as the biggest cluster of infection in the State. After he developed symptoms including mild fever, he was tested and found to be positive for COVID and was admitted to the hospital on May 12.
On Friday, he left the ward around 5 am on the pretext of attending nature’s call and never returned to his bed. It was noticed by the health workers only after about two hours when they were searching for him to give him breakfast.
Noting that he has not gone to his home so far, police officials said they have directed his family members to report to them immediately if he came home.
Police personnel have also been deployed near his house to keep a watch.
In a similar incident on April 28, a COVID patient had escaped from hospital and walked to his house in Pulianthope. He was locked up inside his house by family members after he refused to go back to the hospital.
Later, a four-member police team led by a sub-inspector wearing protection gear entered the house. They managed to convince the man and took him to the hospital under the supervision of health officials.
