Super saro to the rescue: 90-year-old grandma’s ‘superhero’ avatar, an Insta hit during lockdown
A few weeks into the shutdown, while spending time with family, Deepthi Govindarajan thought her grandmother, who was busy reading the newspaper at the time, would look cool in a superhero cape.

After making some adjustments to an old blouse piece, ‘Super Saro’ was born, and Deepthi then uploaded videos chronicling her adventures on social media. The Adventures of Super Saro, which stars Deepthi’s 90-year-old grandmother, was born out of the free time created due to the lockdown. “I started this to spend more time with my grandmother. We shoot videos at home on my phone, and upload it once a week. It only takes half a day for a video, and I spend the rest of the week thinking of an idea,” said Deepthi, who scripts, shoots and directs the series. Super Saro fights against various evil home appliances, or shows off her daily training regimen in episodes. The series has given the duo a chance to bond, said Deepthi. “One thing I’ve learned about my grandmother is that she’s really comfortable on camera. And she’s a one-take queen,” she said.
Confined to their home in Thiruvanmiyur, the series is a way to distract them from the goings-on around them. “It can get overwhelming. There’s a lot of news every day. But I find myself thinking of the next episode or who I could cast as a villain, and it helps me take my mind off things,” said Deepthi, adding that she hopes the series helps others smile.
