The deceased, identified as Singaravelan of Krishnan Street in Pillaiyarpalaiyam, was a wage worker. On Tuesday morning, he had gone to fetch water from the tank that was set up by the municipality on Krishnan Street.
As there was no water in the tank, Singaravelan tried to switch on the motor when he got electrocuted and fell into the drainage nearby. Seeing this, the neighbours rushed to the spot but found that Singaravelan had died on the spot. On information, the Sivakanchi police visited the spot and sent the body for post-mortem examination to Kancheepuram government hospital.
The police placed a barrier around the tank to prevent people from using it. Officials said a few places in Kancheepuram recorded witnessed moderate rains for the past few days. Because of that, the electric lines might have got exposed, officials said. A case has been registered and inquiry is on.
