Free food in Amma Canteens till May 31

All the 407 Amma Canteens in Chennai would continue to serve food free of cost until the end of the lockdown period on the direction of Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, said Municipal Administration and Rural Development Minister SP Velumani.

He gave the instruction at the review meeting chaired by him at the Secretariat on the COVID-19 prevention works undertaken by the Municipal Administration and Rural Development Department and other projects implemented by it.

“From Wednesday, all the 407 Amma Canteens would serve free of cost till May 31. This is being done as per the instruction of the Chief Minister,” the Minister said, adding that the state could overcome COVID-19 if proper awareness was created on the importance of wearing masks, frequent washing of hands and maintaining a physical distance of two meters.

“As part of COVID-19 prevention initiative, the Chief Minister has instructed to distribute two face masks each to 26 lakh people living in slum areas. We have so far distributed the masks to eight lakh people,” he noted.
