Bicycle sharing, on-street parking providers to delay operations despite Corpn nod

However, the service providers opted to delay the operation citing the COVID-19 situation. “The civic body has directed to start collecting parking charges from the vehicles parked on the roads under the on-street parking management system. We had stopped collecting charges after the lockdown was imposed,” a source connected to the private firm said.

The source added that most of the employees, who would collect charges from the vehicle owners, are from Royapuram area.

As a large number of cases are reported from Royapuram, the service provider could not collect charges. “Charges will be collected from June second week onwards.” 

Similarly, the civic body’s ambitious cycle sharing project was also hit owing to the lockdown. 

It is learnt that the civic body wanted to start operating the bicycles and instructed the Hyderabad-based firm to disinfectant all bicycles every day.

“Soon after the lockdown was imposed, we moved all the cycles to Amma Arangam and disinfected them. There are 80 cycle stations and 500 bicycles in the city. So we cannot disinfect the cycles and stations every day. We could only cover a maximum of 15 stations in one day,” a representative said.

The representative hinted that the cycle sharing would be re-introduced in the city after the end of June. Meanwhile, 500 bicycles brought to the city are at the harbour and the civic body could not take the bicycles out due to the lockdown.
