As per the Chennai Corporation data, the city had only 356 containment zones as on Wednesday with Royapuram having 98 containment zones, which is the highest. On Wednesday alone, the civic body removed as many 65 containment zones. Since the outbreak of the disease, 795 containment zones were removed.

"Containment zone strategy is a success as we have prevented the spread within the area. Removing containment zone is an example of how the disease is controlled in the city," Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash said.

Of the 15 zones of the civic body, as many as 137 containment zones have been released in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar zone and 135 containment zones have been released in Royapuram zone. The rapid reduction in the number of containment in the city can be attributed to the civic body's decision of reducing the containment period. The containment period has been reduced to 14 days from 28 days and the officials are relaxing restrictions in the containment zones if new cases are not reported in 14 days.

Also, the civic body that was sealing the entire street during the initial days of the outbreak has decided to only lock the buildings from where the cases are reported. Only if more than five cases are reported from a single street, the civic body will lock the entire street.
