The city police chief’s reaction came after at least three persons, including minors, received serious wounds recently after manja-laced kite thread got entangled on their necks.

AK Viswanathan, while interacting with reporters, said so far over 80 people were arrested in connection with 90 cases of kite sale in the city in the recent months. “We are taking serious action against manja kite sellers and also suppliers as well. If needed, they will be detained under the Goondas Act,” the official noted.

The Commissioner was talking to media persons after distributing masks made of vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides), a perennial bunchgrass believed to be having health benefit, to frontline COVID workers, including police personnel.
