Chennai
According to the police gold weighing 5.8 kg and Rs 17.3 lakh in cash were in the possession of the three persons who were found seated in the car. As the three had given contradictory statements when questioned, the police seized the valuables. Police identified the trio as Jithendrakumar, Babu Sankar of Avadi and Rakesh Mehta of Old Washermanpet.
Revenue department was informed about the seizure and the valuables were kept safely in Thirunindaoor police station. Police exuded confidence that there is no possibility of the seized gold and cash being part of any loot or part of a crime. The seized gold and cash will be handed over to the treasury through revenue department if the three passengers fail to produce the documents to show that the valuables belonged to them.
It may be noted that a number of jewellery dealers and gold ornament makers transport gold without any documents as the gold industry mostly runs on mutual trust and also on unaccounted cash and gold.
