Gang kills youth over enmity in cricket match
A 23-year-old man was chased and hacked to death by a gang of six in broad daylight near his house in Villivakkam on Thursday morning reportedly over an ongoing enmity between two groups over playing cricket.
Chennai
Police said a clash broke out between the two groups after a cricket match in August, following which, Shanmugam, the main suspect in the murder, was arrested for assaulting one Prabu.
After Shanmugam was released on bail in September, Prabu allegedly took Shahjahan, who was murdered, with him to threaten Shanmugam. The scuffle that happened led to the arrest of Shahjahan and Prabu, who were subsequently released. Shanmugam was reportedly awaiting Shahjahan’s release in a bid to eliminate him.
On Thursday morning, when Shahjahan was passing by Annai Sathya Nagar on his motorcycle, six men on three bikes chased and hacked him with machetes and fled the spot after the attack. With severe injuries on his head, shoulders, hand and legs, Shahjahan died on the spot.
A police team from Villivakkam went to the spot and sent the body to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. A case was registered and a hunt has been launched for the suspects, Shanmugam, Diwakar and Ajith among others.
