According to Chennai Corporation data, as many as 88 residents of the street were infected in a short period. “Due to our containment measures and medical care, all the COVID-19 patients were cured and restrictions were lifted. Now, a fresh case has been reported from the street,” a Chennai Corporation official said.

The official added that a 27-year-old policeman posted in the DGP office, a resident of the street, tested positive for coronavirus on Friday.

“Earlier, two residents caught the infection and the street was announced a containment zone. A volunteer, who was helping the residents in the containment zone, had contracted the virus and from the volunteer, others got infected,” he said.

Soon after the patients were cured and infection chain was broken, the Chennai Corporation implemented VR Pillai Street containment strategy across the city and requested the residents to show discipline as shown by the VR Pillai Street residents.

“We will make the house of the newly infected person into a containment zone and restrictions will be imposed to contain further spread,” the official added.
