Man murders wife with crowbar on wedding night, hangs himself

The wedding night of a newly-married couple also turned out to be their last night as the bridegroom stabbed his wife to death with a crowbar following a quarrel before hanging himself on a neighbourhood tree near Minjur in Tiruvallur district on Wednesday.

The deceased, Needhivasan of Somanchery village near Minjur, and Sandhya of Sadayankuppam near Manali got married at a temple in Vayalur in a simple ceremony organised by their parents and relatives. After the wedding, the couple was brought to Needhivasan’s house where the wedding night had been arranged. However, around 10 pm, Needhivasan left the house in a huff and the relatives were shocked to see Sandhya lying dead in a pool of blood in their room. The crowbar used for murder was also lying near the body.

On information, Kattur police rushed to the spot and retrieved Sandhya’s body to send it for post-mortem at Ponneri Government Hospital. Meanwhile, a hunt was launched for Needhivasan, who was found hanging from a tree in the village in the wee hours of Thursday.

Police suspect that Needhivasan could have ended life out of fear for repercussions of the murder he committed. Two separate cases have been registered by Kattur police and further investigation is on. Police said that Needhivasan was a daily wage labourer.

Couple suffers burns in wife’s suicide bid

A 28-year-old woman suffered burns as she tried to immolate self after a tiff with her husband in Villivakkam here on Wednesday night. Her husband too suffered burns while trying to rescue her. Police said D Bhakyalakshmi got into a fight with her husband B Dinesh, an AC mechanic, for allegedly returning home late after work and in the melee attempted self-immolation by dousing herself with kerosene.

While she was engulfed in fire, a shocked Dinesh tried to rescue her and suffered burns in the act. Neighbours, upon hearing their cries, rescued and rushed them to KMC where Bhakyalakshmi and Dinesh have been admitted with 48 per cent and 43 per cent burns respectively. They are said to be in critical care. On information, Villivakkam police have registered a case. The couple has a two-year-old daughter, police said.
