Chennai

According to the Chennai Corporation figures, the mortality rate in the city is exactly at 1 per cent as on Wednesday morning. Earlier, the mortality in the city was hovering around 0.7 per cent and 0.8 per cent. Of the total 25,937 positive cases reported so far in the city, 260 (including two cross notified to other states) had died, as per records. As the Directorate of Public Health (DPH) has decided to cross verify the deaths, the city’s mortality rate is expected to increase further.

Also, the surge in cases reported recently have also resulted in a slump in the overall recovery rate. With 12,591 being recovered on Wednesday alone, the recovery rate stands at 48.4 per cent. The recovery rate as on June 7 was 50.4 per cent and as on June 6, the same was 51.8 per cent. Among the 15 zones in the city, the highest number of deaths has been reported from Royapuram zone, with 52 deaths so far. Thiru Vi Ka Nagar and Teynampet zones have registered 43 and 37 deaths respectively, as per Tuesday’s data. According to sources, around 30 per cent of COVID-19 patients in the city had died within a few hours after being admitted to the hospitals. “This is due to asymptomatic patients becoming critical even before they could know about their condition. A slight delay in reaching hospitals also contributes to this,” a Chennai Corporation official said.
