The victim Visalakshi is running a shop selling vegetables at Vichur village. It was about six months ago that she got introduced to the suspect, who approached her as a customer and identified herself as Bhavani.

Whenever Bhavani visited the shop, she used to tell Visalakshi she was desperately in need of money. She claimed that she had kept some gold in reserve and expressed the plan to sell it to meet her requirement.

On Thursday, tempted by the offer that she can have the gold for a much cheaper price than the market rate, Visalakshi bought a 400 gm gold bar for Rs 3 lakh – this worked out to only one-sixth of the prevailing price. However, when she went to the nearby jewel shop to check its value, Visalakshi was shocked to find that it was not gold.

When she tried to call Bhavani, her phone remained switched off. That is when Visalakshi realised that she has been cheated. She then lodged a complaint at Manali New Town police station, who registered a case and are searching for the woman.
