S Adhilakshmi, a resident of Washermenpet alleged that she was compromising a fight between two parties in front of her house during Vinayaka Chaturthi when constable Praveen Kumar knocked her down. She was taken to the station on September 13, 2018, and when her son questioned the act, police officials detained him.

Though she was allowed to go home at midnight, her son was kept at the station. When she went to the station the next morning, constable Anuradha scolded her in filthy language. “Out of frustration, she swallowed a small ring and glass bead, and (constable) Praveen mocked he can give her 20 more beads to die,” the petition read.

Eventually, at the Magistrate’s house, she revealed what happened and the Magistrate asked the Inspector to hospitalise her.

Commission member Chittaranjan Mohandoss said, “It is clear that police have not followed the guidelines and the complainant was harassed and humiliated. Hence, the government shall pay compensation of Rs two lakh and recover the same from the police officials involved.”
