80 per cent of Chennai streets have no active corona cases: Chennai Corporation data

Even as the city continues to pile on more than 1000 cases of COVID-19 everyday, data gathered by the Greater Chennai Corporation presents hope as more than 80 percent of Chennai streets are free from active cases.

According to data released by the civic body, of the total 39,537 streets in the metropolis, only 7,801 have active positive cases of coronavirus and 31,736 streets do not even have active positive cases, which is 80.27 per cent of the total streets. As on June 17, the city had 34,794 positive cases, of which 17,331 were in hospitals, COVID care centres and home quarantine. In another positive sign, 6,020 streets out of 7,801 have less than three cases and only 729 streets have five or more active cases.

Among the 15 zones of the Corporation, Anna Nagar has the highest number of affected streets, which is 994. The zone has 2,524 streets. Despite having the highest number of streets (4,256 streets) in the city, only 412 streets in Ambattur zone have active positive cases.

A total of 973 streets in Tondiarpet and 941 streets in Teynampet have been infected. Similarly, 904 streets in Royapuram have active cases. However, Tondiarpet, Royapuram and Teynampet zones have more number of streets with five or more cases, suggesting the increased spread within the streets. The three zones have 118, 146 and 111 streets respectively with five or more cases.

Besides, the civic body has identified 64 streets as clusters and converted them into containment zones. Of the 64, 24 are in Tondiarpet zone. Corporation Commissioner G Prakash said that 299 infected people went untraceable after having tested positive for the virus. “With police help, we have traced 150 of them and brought them into our system. The remaining are being traced,” he added.
