Land dispute over, Velachery twin flyover works to resume

 “The dispute over land acquisition brought the works on the flyover to a standstill. The acquisition was done after moving the Supreme Court. The private land is crucial for the construction works since the Metro water pipeline running along the junction should be shifted there. Now we have cleared all the hurdles that halted the construction work,” said a Highways department official.

 The twin flyover project work, which began in January 2016 would be speeded up with the completion of the land acquisition process, the official said, adding it would be completed in six months.

 The flyover was proposed to ease traffic flow at Vijayanagar junction, linking Velachery Main Road, Velachery Bypass Road, Taramani Link Road and GST Road. As per the plan, one flyover will start at Velachery Bypass Road and end near the Velachery MRTS station while the other will connect Taramani Link Road to the Bypass Road. The second flyover will go over the first one at a height of 13m at the junction. Both flyovers will have two lanes and will be unidirectional. 

So far, the Highways department has completed about 85 per cent of its work. “We have laid 48 foundations out of the total 54 and completed 42 deck slabs out of 52. We will be able to lay the remaining six foundations only after taking possession of the private land and shifting of the water pipeline,” the official said.
