Temporary sanitary inspectors hired as staff from districts return home

With the sanitary inspectors deputed from other urban local bodies in the State returning after coronavirus cases in the districts began spiking in the recent days, the Greater Chennai Corporation appointed more than 100 sanitary inspectors on contract basis to fill the vacancies in the city to intensify COVID-19 control measures.

According to the Corporation, 92 of the 200 divisions in the city do not have sanitary inspectors, and 12 sanitary inspectors are on leave or given other duties. "Some among the 12 sanitary inspectors are under treatment after catching the infection.

The existing sanitary inspectors are overseeing more than two divisions COVID-19 and control measures are affected because of this. The temporary appointment started a few weeks ago, we still have 11 posts vacant," an official said.

The official added that 102 sanitary inspectors have been appointed on contract basis till July 10. Of them, 11 sanitary inspectors have been allocated to the Thiru Vi Ka zone that had 9 vacancies.

"Of the 11 temporary sanitary inspectors, 9 have been allotted divisions and two sanitary inspectors will share the burden of others whenever required. Most of the sanitary inspectors have started work," a permanent sanitary inspector attached to Thiru Vi Ka Nagar zone said.

It is learnt that the civic body had given an oral instruction to the zonal officials to appoint temporary sanitary inspectors following which the respective zonal officers passed order appointing them. The temporary sanitary inspectors would be on the civic body payroll until COVID-19 situation subsides in the city.

When asked an official about the 40 sanitary inspectors who were deputed from other urban local bodies in the State, the official said that all of them returned to their respective local bodies as COVID-19 cases begin to surge in other districts.

"Apart from this, we have appointed 500 public health students as interns to assist the sanitary inspectors. But, most of the students are not reporting to the work regularly,” said the official.
