The vain ATM burglary attempts took place between 3 and 3.30 am in two places. Miscreants damaged the ATMs of Canara Bank and State Bank of India on Mangadu main road in Moulivakkam, and that of IDBI on Manapakkam main road. However, since the emergency alarm went off at the ATMs, the burglars had to flee before they could lay hands on the money.
Later, alerted by the banks, Mangadu police rushed to the spot and conducted inquiries. CCTV footage from all three ATMs have been collected and a hunt has been launched for the gang. Police suspect the same gang could be behind all three incidents.
Similarly, burglars managed to enter three apartment houses and two individual houses in Abiramapuram on Tuesday night and managed to escape with 7.5 sovereigns, a laptop, a mobile phone, a bike and cash. Among the victims is a doctor and they all came to know about the burglary on Wednesday morning.
Mylapore Deputy Commissioner Shashank Sai visited the spot and conducted inquiries. Police suspect the burglars might have gained entry into houses using duplicate keys.
Meanwhile, RK Nagar police arrested four persons including two juveniles in connection with the Rs 1.68 lakh burglary from a furniture shop in Tondiarpet.
