Alarmed by COVID death, Tasmac staff seek safety gear

Sources said that Raja (43), the former general secretary of the Tasmac workers’ union and staff at the shop in Chengalpattu, got infected by coronavirus a few days ago. Raja, who was under treatment at the Chengalpattu government hospital, died on Tuesday morning without responding to treatment.

Following this, employees refused to open the shops and gathered before the Zonal Manager’s office seeking proper safety gear for all the staff. “Many of us could have already been infected by the virus. Officials should look into the issue and provide us with good quality masks and gloves to resume work,” an employee said.

Due to the protest, shops in Kancheepuram southern zone remained closed on Tuesday.
