The district administration had closed the Rajaji market in Kancheepuram and shifted it to Vaiyur village a few months ago. The vendors claimed that no proper arrangements were made and the condition of the market has worsened after the rain. Following that, arrangements were made to shift the market again to a college ground. Sources said that the market was scheduled to open on Wednesday but there were only 100 shops when the market in Vaiyur has 350. On Wednesday early morning, hundreds of vendors gathered on Pachayapas ground and protested against the municipality. Municipal officials and police arrived at the spot and held talks with the protestors. They assured to make necessary arrangements in a few days and allowed them to open shops at Vaiyur till then.
