CITU affiliated union general secretary P Srinivasalu said the union has traced the details of all the workers died of COVID, except one. “Out of the 12 workers, nine were permanent workers and two were contract workers and one was a field worker. Of the nine permanent workers, three were malaria workers and two were sanitary workers,” he said.
He noted that the Corporation had earlier claimed that only nine workers in the civic body died of COVID. “We have submitted a detailed report consisting of death report, lab report, hospital discharge summary, address and photo of the 11 deceased to the Corporation administration. We are trying to trace one left out worker,” he pointed out.
Pointing out the State government announcement that the Corporation workers, if contracted COVID-19, would be given Rs 2 lakh assistance and in case of death, the worker’s family would be given Rs 50 lakh, he said his union has been demanding the government to extend the assistance to all the workers, including contract and temporary workers engaged in the COVID-19 related works.
“We came to know that the civic body has started paying Rs 2 lakh to few workers affected by the COVID-19. So far, the families of deceased workers were not paid Rs 50 lakh solatium yet,” he noted.
A senior corporation official said that they had not finalised the number of corporation workers affected by the Covid-19 or died subsequently.
