Old hotspots register lowest active cases

According to Chennai Corporation data, of the total positive cases reported in Tondiarpet and Royapuram zones, only 6 and 7 per cent of the patients are still under treatment. In Royapuram alone, 10,041 persons have recovered from the virus, which is the highest number of recovered persons in a city zone. In Tondiarpet, 8,600 persons have recovered. Following Tondiarpet and Royapuram, Manali has registered a single digit active case percentage. The zone has only 8 per cent active cases.

However, the zones registered 242 and 255 deaths respectively, which is 2.56 and 2.30 per cent mortality rate. Overall, 2,076 persons died in the city, which is 2.13 per cent mortality rate. Even though the active cases in several zones are coming down, the Corporation remains cautious in taking the guard down. “Our strategy is working out well. The stability that we have reached is sustained for a month and it will take some more time on this level,” G Prakash, Chennai Corporation Commissioner, said.

He added that the civic body is appealing to the public to wear masks and social distancing would have to be maintained for at least 4 to 5 months. Meanwhile, the city has only 13 per cent of active cases with 12,735 persons still under treatment. Overall, 82,764 persons have recovered from the virus. On the other hand, the number of active cases in Anna Nagar, Teynampet and Kodambakkam also has come down to 13 per cent, 10 per cent and 15 per cent respectively. After Tondiarpet and Royapuram zones, the central zones have become hotspots, where the recovery rate is increasing.
