Police said Mohanraj, town secretary of the DMK, submitted a petition alleging that the Periyar statue on the bus stand premises was vandalised. “Subsequently, he also circulated messages on social media platforms about the same,” claimed a police officer.

Further stating that the statue was damaged due to the rains, police claimed that all statues in the district are always under their watch ever since former Chief Minister MG Ramachandran’s statue was desecrated in Puducherry.

“Hence there is no chance of anyone damaging it,” claimed the officer adding that Mohanraj has been booked for spreading rumours.
