According to Corporation data, there were only 56 containment zones in the city as on Sunday and all are part of the five zones falling under the central region.
Of them, 18 are in Kodambakkam that has 1,511 active cases while Ambattur and Anna Nagar have 17 and 16 containment zones respectively. These zones have 1,307 and 1,327 active cases. Teynampet has three containment zones and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar has one containment zone. On June 18, the city had 64 containment zones with most of them being located in central Chennai. During the initial days of the spread, a large number of cases were reported from north Chennai and several streets had been converted into containment zones.
Of the 12,436 active cases in the city, 6,050 cases are from central Chennai zone. The civic body is converting those areas and streets, where a huge number of cases are reported, as a part of the cluster containment plan. Earlier, the civic body was sealing entire streets from where just one or two cases were being reported. The strategy has been modified so that just the houses or buildings are sealed if a lesser number of cases are reported. The civic body will remove restrictions in containment zones if the streets stop reporting fresh cases for 14 days.
