According to Chennai Corporation data, the city has 26 containment zones, of which three are located in Sholinganallur zone, one of the south Chennai zones. Valasaravakkam and Perungudi, also south zones, have one containment area each.

The civic body would convert areas and streets with a huge number of cases as a part of cluster containment plan.

“New cases are being reported in the extended zones like Perungudi and Sholinganallur zones owing to a huge amount of floating population from the neighboring districts. We are giving more importance to the extended zones and have intensified control measures,” an official said. As per the data, of the 22 containment zones in the central Chennai region, eight are in Ambattur zone, another extended zone. Also, Anna Nagar zone has eight containment zones. Interestingly, north Chennai zones, including Tondiarpet and Royapuram, do not any have containment zones.

It may be noted that on August 2, the city had 56 containment zones and all of them were in five zones of the central region. As on Thursday morning, Valasaravakkam zone had 875 active cases, whereas Perungudi and Sholinganallur zones had 442 and 453 active cases respectively. The civic body will remove restrictions in the containment zones if the streets stop reporting fresh cases for 14 days.
