It has been 45 years since he has entered the cinema. As a tribute to Rajini’s illustrious cinema career, Abishek Kalainjan has done two isometric illustrations of two of Superstar’s films - Johnny and Mullum Malarum. “Rajini sir is one of my favourite actors in the Tamil film industry. He is an actor who broke all stereotypes of how an actor should look like. His dark complexion didn’t stop him from pursuing his passion. Not only the old generation, but he has also created a huge impact on the current generation as well.
When I came to know that Rajini sir completed 45 years in the film industry, I decided to do a tribute to him. That’s how I created two isometric illustrations of his films,” says Abishek. An isometric illustration is a style of drawing which uses a technique called isometric projection. With isometric projection, any 3D object can be depicted on a flat two-dimensional surface. Explaining the process behind it, he says, “This is an isometric view of the important scenes from the film. I don’t include all the scenes in the illustration, but only take plot-defining scenes that convey the idea of the movie. I will be having a rough idea of what all scenes need to be included in the illustration.
I also take scene suggestions from my friends and look out for public opinion as well. First, I sketch the scenes on the paper and later develop the scenes frame by frame. Though Rajini sir has done more than 120 films, Mullum Malarum and Johnny are my favourites. Both are to date considered as his best films. Also, both films are directed by Mahendran. He is one of the greatest filmmakers of Tamil cinema and has influenced several filmmakers of the generations followed.”
