The man came to the unaccompanied baggage terminal for clearance of his personal household goods. Based on a tipoff, the officials opened the carton boxes and found bedspreads and toy boxes among other items. But the bedspread, wrapped with a cardboard sheet, appeared to be unusually heavy that raised their suspicion.

When they opened two layers of cardboard sheets, officials found gold foil wrapped in carbon paper concealed in between the layers. Similar cardboard sheets were found in all toy boxes as well. There were more gold foils wrapped in carbon papers concealed inside them.

In all, the officials seized 10 gold foils weighing 1.45 kg, estimated to be worth Rs 78.4 lakh, from the four carton boxes. The smuggled gold was recovered and seized.

The man from Kallakurichi, who was working as an electrician in Dubai and had lost his job due to COVID pandemic, was also arrested.
