The victim, Azarudhin, is the third son of M Mubarak Basha (34) of RK Pet, who runs a meat shop in Sholingur. Around 1 pm, Basha received a call while returning from work and the caller told him that he has kidnapped his son. Basha rushed to the house and found his parents, wife and two children. His third son Azarudhin, who was playing outside, was missing. He then called the abductor, who told him to keep Rs 1 crore ready in one hour to get his son back.

Shocked Basha alerted RK Pet police who immediately swung into action. Meanwhile, passersby found Azaradhin on the roadside in the locality and alerted police. He was rescued and the accused was traced using the location of his mobile phone.

He was identified as S Sulaiman (30), a relative of Basha. Police said Sulaiman, burdened with debt, decided to kidnap the child since he had a dispute with Basha. “Out of fear that he could be nabbed by police, he abandoned the child,” said police.

Sulaiman was booked under Section 364A (kidnapping for ransom) and remanded in judicial custody.
