25k ‘stranded’ persons returned in a week

In the first week after the State government relaxed norms for availing e-passes, a majority of the returnees to the city had used the ‘return of stranded people’ category to enter the city.

According to Chennai Corporation data, between August 17 and August 24, the civic body had approved as many as 81,733 e-passes. Of the total passes approved, more than 24,000 passes are under the category of ‘return of stranded people’, which is more than 25 per cent.

On the first day alone, the civic body had approved 14,355 e-passes, which is the highest number of passes approved in a single day since the relaxation.

Also, close to 20,000 persons had entered the city for work-related reasons and 9,675 persons availed passes for medical emergencies. As many as 10,666 persons had entered the city from other states and countries through flights and trains. Around 12,800 persons had come to the city in the eight days to attend marriages.

“During the period, 1,966 persons availed passes to attend funerals. On August 24, we had approved 9,997 passes. Everyone, who is staying in the city beyond 48 hours, should undergo home quarantine. Persons, who do not have any other emergency need, are applying under the stranded persons category,” an official said.
