COVID results by SMS now in RGGGH too

After Madurai and Salem, the Health Department has introduced the automated facility to inform COVID-19 test results over SMS in Chennai, too. The automated response system was launched for those who undergo the test at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) by Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar on Wednesday. In two weeks, this would be extended to all GHs across the State, he said.

“The automated system of relaying results of COVID-19 patients has already been started at government hospitals in Madurai and Salem. RGGGH, too, will follow the process of informing COVID-19 status within 36 hours of testing through SMS,” the Minister said. The automated system was launched after the government received several complaints that the results of the test was being delayed.

Earlier, volunteers and district health officers contacted those testing positive to inform them about the result. However, this was not done in the case of the persons testing negative. This resulted in long waiting period for results, leading to confusion over testing and infection status of the persons.

Thus, the Health Department launched the automated response facility to ensure zero delay. Under the new system, after the results are informed through SMS, volunteers from Greater Chennai Corporation or district administration would follow up with the patient for treatment and hospitalisation.

The volunteers would assist the patients to reduce the turnaround time to obtain medical help after receiving the results. RGGGH also has prior intimation helpline and zero delay ward for COVID-19 treatment to ensure easy access for patients.

Vijaya Baskar added this facility would be available at all government hospitals in Tamil Nadu in the next two weeks.

At a function held at RGGGH on Wednesday, the Health Minister also launched battery operated cars for transporting patients within the hospital premises.
