The incident happened on Friday evening when the victim, U Mohammed Wasim (32) of Ice House, an egg seller, was returning home after depositing Rs 10,000 at a cash depositing machine (CDM) of Indian Overseas Bank at Mandaveli MRTS station.

On the way, he was stopped by two men wearing police uniform on Srungeri Mutt road. They asked him about the money that he was carrying. When Mohammed Wasim, who did not suspect any foul play, replied that he had Rs 2.25 lakh with him, the men in khaki asked him to hand it over to them. They told him he should produce supporting documents to account for the cash.

Within a few minutes, even as Wasim was being questioned by the duo, a red colour car reached the spot. The driver too joined the interrogation. They took the money from him and asked him to come to Mandaveli police station with necessary documents to take the cash back.

Mohammed Wasim, who went home confused, was shocked to know that there was no police station for Mandaveli separately. After realising that he was cheated, he rushed to Abiramapuram police station on Saturday and narrated the incident. Wasim filed a complaint at the police station, based on which a hunt has been launched for the imposter policemen with the help of CCTV footage.
