The General Council meeting of the Opposition DMK, the highest policy level decision-taking body of the party, would be held on September nine to elect its new General Secretary and Treasurer.

DMK President M K Stalin, in a statement here on Tuesday said, the meeting, to be chaired by him, would be held at 1000 hrs through video conferencing and all the General Council members were asked to participate in it without fail.

He said the agenda for the meeting was to elect the new General Secretary and Party Treasurer.

As a prelude to it, the DMK district secretaries meeting would be held on September three, in which some important issues were expected to be discussed ahead of the General Council.

At the General Council meeting, senior leader and former Minister Duraimurugan was tipped to be elected as the new General Secretary, a post held by party veteran K Anbazhagan for 43 years till his death in March this year.

The DMK had earlier convened its General Council meet on March 29 to elect the new General Secretary.

Since Mr Duraimurugan emerged as the front runner for the second most powerful position in the party, he had resigned from the post of Treasurer on March 16 and it was accepted by Mr Stalin. But the meeting was postponed in view of the coronavirus lockdown.

Mr Stalin had on June three announced that Mr Duraimurugan will continue in the post of Party Treasurer.

Since the DMK General Council meeting to elect a new Treasurer, following the resignation of Duraimurugan, could not be held due to the corona lockdown, he would continue in the post.

He said the resignation of Mr Duraimurugan has been kept in abeyance temporarily and he would continue as the party Treasurer till the General Council meeting was held.

Meanwhile, a couple of senior leaders were said to be in contention for the coveted post of Treasurer, which was earlier held by Mr Stalin. Among the names doing the rounds in party circles were former Ministers E V Velu and K Ponmudy and a final picture was likely to emerge at the General Council meet.
