As on Friday, the Corporation officials have managed to identify 60 children who had dropped out between classes 1 and 5; 45 children between classes 6 and 8; 90 children from classes 9 and 10; and 85 from classes 11 and 12, said an official.
The civic body had instructed headmasters of Corporation schools to constitute teachers’ teams conduct a door-to-door campaign to enrol new students and also identify those who dropped out. The teachers covered more than 1.30 lakh houses near their schools and identified less than 300 dropped out students.
“This suggests that the number of school dropouts in the city is low. Parents of those students have been requested to send their children back to school,” the official said.
Meanwhile, more than 22,000 students have been newly admitted to the Corporation schools since the State government allowed the schools to start admissions. Of the new admissions, around 4,000 are from private schools. “Remaining are students who are shifting between the Corporation schools. We are trying to increase the strength to 1 lakh students. As of now, we have reached 90,000 student strength,” the official added.
It is learnt that most of the new admissions are to LKG, and classes 5, 9 and 11. The civic body is also enrolling children of three years of age during the door-to-door campaign in LKG. The campaign to identify drop outs would end on Tuesday, but the admission process would continue.
There are 281 Corporation schools, which can admit more than 1 lakh students. But they had only 83,000 students last academic year.
