With 2,461 killing selves in city last year, Chennai is India’s suicide capital

Chennai city recorded the maximum number of suicides in the country during 2019, according to the latest NCRB data. The city recorded as many as 2,461 suicides last year, which is 17 per cent more than 2,102-odd cases in 2018.

However, the State in whole has registered a decreasing trend. In Tamil Nadu, a total of 13,493 people had committed suicide last year compared to 13,896 people killing themselves in 2018.

Maharashtra topped the suicide list with 18,916 cases, while TN stood second.

In 2018, Chennai was positioned second after Delhi, which then recorded 2,369 suicides. In 2019, Delhi was positioned second with 2,423 suicides and Bengaluru third with 2,081 cases.

In Tamil Nadu, Madurai city too recorded an increase in suicides from 295 in 2018 to 345 in 2019. In Coimbatore, the number has come down marginally from 340 in 2018 to 338 last year. Similarly, in Tiruchy number of suicides came down from 193 to 188 during the same period.

All over the country, a total of 1,39,123 people committed suicide last year while in 2018, the number was 1,34,516.
