Active cases in Chennai drops below 10 pc

Despite the city reporting more than 1,000 new cases every day, active cases in the city have dropped to less than 10 per cent on Thursday morning.

According to Chennai Corporation data, the city had reported 1,37,732 COVID-19 cases, of which 12,537 cases are active cases, which is only 9 per cent. Among the zones, Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Anna Nagar, Teynampet and Kodambakkam have less than 10 per cent active cases. With only 6 per cent active cases, Tondiarpet and Teynampet zones have the least percentage of active cases.

But in terms of the number of cases, Manali has the lowest number of active cases with 154 cases. Despite having 1,461 and 1,383 active cases, which are highest, Anna Nagar and Kodambakkam have only 9 per cent active cases each. This is due to the zones having reported 15,647 and 15,655 positive cases. Despite eight zones registering less than 10 per cent active cases, Madhavaram, Ambattur and Adyar have 10 per cent active cases. With 1,22,407 persons recovered from the virus, the city has registered an 89 per cent recovery rate.

Meanwhile, 2,788 COVID-19 victims had died in the city, which is 2.02 per cent mortality rate. Among the zones, Teynampet recorded the highest number of deaths as 388 persons died, which is 2.91 per cent mortality rate. Also, Anna Nagar and Kodambakkam reported more than 300 COVID-19 deaths. On Wednesday alone, the civic body had tested as many as 13,130 samples and identified 1,025 positive cases.
