In a move to encourage passengers to use contactless ticketing, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has started giving discounts on QR code ticketing from Friday.

“CMRL has decided to extend to 20 per cent discount on QR Code ticketing — namely single journey QR ticket, return journey QR ticket, group QR ticket and QR trip passes,” a CMRL statement said.

The statement added that the initiative is a measure to encourage passengers to avoid queuing at Metro Stations by downloading the CMRL Mobile app for using the QR code ticketing system. Travel Card Readers have also been installed at all Metro Stations for passengers to avoid queuing in front of customer counters and ticket vending machines.

“All passengers should cooperate with CMRL security, ticketing and other staff for a safe and smooth journey in its fight to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by maintaining social distancing,” CMRL requested.

Meanwhile, a total of 24,354 passengers have used Metro Rail services in the last three days from September 7. Till September 9, a total of 18,769 passengers travelled in the Metro using Smart Card ticketing system and 637 of passengers have utilized the QR code ticketing system.
