City woman collects footage to track sexual assault accused

A 23-year-old scuba diving instructor is trying to wage a bold battle all by herself against groping men of Chennai streets after becoming victim of such a harassment by a bike rider on Tuesday evening in Mugalivakkam when she was out taking her dog for a walk.

Though they initially failed to respond to her complaint lodged online, officials contacted her on Saturday after seeing her social media post and promised to nab the man soon.

“He seems to have slowed down as he approached me from behind. I could not hear the sound of the bike. After touching me, he sped away,” the woman told DT Next. According to her, it was not the first time she was facing harassment like this. “And I am not the only one experienced such behaviour from men. There are of course other women who were grabbed or groped while they are on the street,” the woman added.

She had been trying to get the video footage from various surveillance cameras installed in her neighbourhood in the last two-three days and has managed to collect two such footages, she said. She is confident of being able to catch hold of the man who sexually harassed her.

“I am trying to do my best to catch the man. But when I catch him...then what? There are a million out there doing the same to other women. I am just so sick of being scared of just taking a godamn walk... So sick of having to worry about stepping out at all... I am so sick of living in a country where a cow is given more protection than a woman, I am just sick of it all (sic),” she noted in a social media post, venting her anger and frustration.
