Cybercriminals won’t spare city’s top cop either, post fake FB profile

While a few fake Facebook profiles in the name of Assistant Commissioners and inspectors in Tamil Nadu Police have cropped up online, the latest to join the list is city Commissioner of Police (CoP) Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal and Additional Commissioner (South) R Dhinakaran as miscreants have created accounts in their names by downloading images from their original accounts.

While both the officials have clarified that it was fake accounts and asked others not to entertain any requests from the profiles, a senior official confirmed to DT Next that fake accounts have been created in the name of at least seven officials in the rank of DGP and ADGP in the state police department.

While the official added that it is not clear if IPS officers in other states are also facing similar troubles, efforts are on to trace the miscreants. “We have found out that profiles are being created in Rajasthan. The persons would be secured soon,” said the official.

Only a couple of days ago, cybercriminals had targetted police personnel who had their Facebook profile pictures in uniform, by creating their fake accounts and requesting money from their friends claiming that they are ‘caught in an emergency situation’.

The cybercrime wing is probing the matter after some cops took up the matter on being alerted by their friends on Facebook.
