The DVAC registered the case against R Karunanidhi, former JC (Enforcement) and his wife Tamilrani this week under provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act. The wealth of the suspect, pegged at Rs 6.4 lakh at the beginning of the check period (April 1, 2012) stood at Rs 76.5 lakh during the end of check period (April 30, 2018). The DVAC, after calculating the income and expenditure besides possible savings carefully, reached on the figure of Rs 28.5 lakh of disproportionate wealth.
The DVAC FIR says his wife had instigated Karunanidhi to amass wealth beyond his known source of income and thus she has been listed as co-accused in the FIR.
It also noted that the couple’s son has completed MBBS in a private college while daughter is pursuing medicine in another college. The entire family was solely dependent on the monthly salary of Karunanidhi, the DVAC document said.
