According to Chennai Corporation data, of the 300 roads selected for the improvement works, 140 are in Tiruvottiyur zone. As many as 99 roads are in Sholinganallur and 50 are in Madhavaram. Also, 40 roads in Manali will be taken under the project.
It may be noted that the civic body had recently proposed a Rs 300-crore project to improve the conditions of interior roads in all the 15 zones, which were damaged due to road cuts and potholes. A total of 2,828 interior roads have been earmarked for improvement.
The Corporation maintains as many as 34,893 interior roads and streets extending up to 5,623 kilometres, of which 1292.54 kilometres of roads are cement concrete roads.
“The selected interior roads have been segregated into more than 20 packages and we have invited contractors for 8 packages for Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram and Sholinganallur. Of the 15 zones in the city, as many as 745 interior roads would be re-laid in Perungudi zone, which is the highest number of roads earmarked for improvement in a single zone,” an official said.
Apart from this, the civic body has commenced a process to improve and re-lay more than 59 bus route roads across the city at a cost of Rs 1,160 crore under Chennai Mega City Development Mission (CMCDM) and Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Fund (TURIF) funds.
