About 500 pregnant +ve women treated at KMCH since April

V Saroja, who was discharged from the hospital on Friday, recently gave birth to a male child after a natural labour procedure. Despite being COVID positive, Saroja gave natural birth to the child and was managed without any complications.

Similarly, as many as 292 deliveries of COVID positive women have been performed at the hospital with more than 50 per cent of them admitted with comorbidities during the same period. Of a total of 292 deliveries, about 183 women underwent Caesarean while 109 others had natural labour.

While 22 COVID positive patients were admitted with SARI and influenza-like illness and other symptoms, three of them were critical and admitted to an intensive care unit. Five complicated cases of pregnancies were also treated after intensive care. More than 50 per cent of the pregnant women had comorbidities including diabetes, hypertension, cardiac issues, anaemia, breathlessness and other comorbid conditions. However, all the patients were successfully treated and discharged from the hospital.

A total of nine newborns also tested positive for COVID-19 at the hospital. However, the newborns were asymptomatic and did not have any comorbidities. Senior officials from Kilpauk MCH said all pregnant women are being screened for COVID-19 and then shifted to the general ward if the result turns negative. “We have 40 beds exclusively for pregnant women who are COVID-19 positive and critical care units are also arranged,” said an official.
